Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer

Well the time has come to discuss the vampires in Twilight. I figured I should discuss them before going any further in order to come back to them in future discussions. I am finding it difficult to continue without being able to relate other vampires to those in Twilight.

I started reading the Twilight saga after the third book came out, and I will admit I became addicted. But I mean come on, sparkling vampires. You don’t need to be a fan of the vampire to realize that is extremely cheesy. Not only do they glitter, but there is never any mention of fangs, and how can you have a vampire with no fangs. Overall I felt that these vampires lack any real substance, and they are far too safe.

Granted there are no rules for vampire portrayal and I do believe this creative freedom is what has helped to keep the vampire immortal in popular culture. I guess even the vampire needs to keep up with the times and appeal to different audiences.

And it is important to note that this series has helped to bring the vampire back into mainstream popular culture for a younger generation, but please no more sparkling.

  1. I may be bias, but these are my favourite vampires. Not only because I may or may not have a crush on Edward but because I think that the fact that they don't have any fangs and turn into bats make them more realistic. They all still have the most important traits of the vampire but just a more updated version.

But I do agree that the sparkling in the light is cheesy.

  2. I agree, the twilight vampires are far too safe. I might need to become a vampire to get Edwards hair though.
I must say, this is the coolest and most unique blog I have ever come across. I am definitely going to follow it!

  3. I agree with Amanda. Twilight vampires are the best. It has a modern spin on it on the stereotypical vampire with black hair who wears a cape.

  4. I started reading the "Twilight" novels after I saw the first movie because I wanted more. I fell for the love story and got caught up in all the romance. However, the sparkling is my least favourite thing about these vampires. The writing is definitely aimed towards the tweens crowd but I liked the story anyways. I understand the vampires are made attractive to lure in their prey but glittering in the sunlight? Awful. It undermines their vicious and threatening nature and makes them appear less harmless than they actually are. Disappointing but overall a good story.

  5. The Twilight vampires are probably the worst vampires. I mean sparkling. What is up with that? When I saw the first movie i thought to myself, they are wrecking the vampire image. What about the scary vampire? Or better yet, The Count. The Count is definitely the best vampire. 1 ah ha ha. 2 ah ha ha. I really like the episode where him and Cookie monster count the cookies.

  6. I AGREE WITH BRETT(sept the count is cool just no the best). So i have an obsession with vampires too Lindsay... umm i even took a half credit course at Western about vamps (my professor was from romania, insaneness, learned theories behind vamps etc) TWILIGHT = AWFUL. okay love the love story love the rob pattison but seriously terrible writing and does not follow most vamp stories.
Salems Lot- Steven King= best best best best best vampire novel ive ever read. Couldnt sleep for weeks. Perfect vamp story. ie the whole idea behind vamp folklore is make the reader/viewer believe that vamps are real that its so hard to believe they exist because its so unnatural u would even ignore the signs. IE READ SALEMS LOT i have you can borrow it.

  7. Pure marketing on the sparkle effect. I love boys that sparkle. Great t-shirt line from a profit perspective.

  9. Lindsay - how dare you insult my sparkling, beautiful future husband! Honestly, I know Twilight is often criticized for its substance (or lackthereof), but you just have to take it for what it is. I tried for a long time not to buy into the fad, but once I started reading the books I was HOOKED. Fangs or not, I love these vampires.

  10. I wish I could comment like the rest of you, however believe it or not I have never even watched Twilight. All of these posts and the insane amount discuss on the TV and radio about this series/movie has definitely got my intrigued. Maybe when I finally break away from all this homework I'll be able to join you guys on the Twilight train...

  11. OMG Dawn Twilight is one of the best movies I've actually seen in a while. It's funny cause a roommate pushed me to go watch it and I was never really a big fan of vampire movies, but it was great! A definite must see!

  12. Twilight made me fall in love with Vamparies, a world where they can be deliciously evil yet they still have a regard for humanity in a world where human beings don't. I would have to disagree as in my fantasy world there would be only Edwards. The books are far better than the movie, clearly at least then you can create your own perfect version.
